book review: The Ruins on Stone Hill (Heroes of Ravenford Book 1) by F.P. Spirit

In The Ruins on Stone Hill, F.P. Spirit unfolds this story in a way that reveals the nature of the characters by showing them in action with one another. There are few large blocks of back story or character exposition. The absence of these telling-techniques keeps the story moving forward while allowing readers to get to know the characters. There is a good balance of interior monologue on the part of each character and enough personal history is provided to let readers connect with each of the principal players. I really like the way these characters are getting to know each other’s quirks, faults and strengths through situations where they are called upon to work together to win the battles they encounter.

The magic and creatures are wonderful and never ending. Something new and entertaining is introduced in every conflict. I won’t give away any specifics, but I do have my preferred creatures, based on their uniqueness. It’s obvious from the title of my review who my favorite character is, and I do expect to be notified when Lloyd’s action figure is available for purchase. However, I really like this entire team, and my second favorite is Seth. This book is pretty much non-stop action, and when the team rests, the reader is ready for a rest also. Lots of interesting secondary characters people this fiction, and I think this is a great adventure book for young readers.
