book review: the liar's wife by samantha hayes

In The Liar's Wife, Samantha Hayes manipulates POV, the past and the present, and chapter breaks in ways that keep readers turning the pages and refusing to skip any of them for fear of missing an important clue or detail.
Ella is the neighbor in the apartment complex that a person just might befriend except for an obvious something around her that doesn't invite socializing or friendship. Her secret is one that would probably genuinely control anyone's life in the same way that it does hers. Once you discover it, it's easy to understand how she ends up being the Liar's Wife. In books of this genre, I have an appreciation for characters who have to struggle physically and psychologically with the situation they're thrown into. It's easy to say what such characters should have done or what we might have done, but the author provides enough insight into Ella's make up that her behavior and thoughts and actions make it easy to feel her personal
entrapment and to struggle with her to overcome setbacks that are so realistically defeating.
I liked Liam, Ella's coworker and admirer. He is a man determined to follow his instincts regarding the woman he cares about. He possesses a quiet tenacity and a systematic approach, occasionally veering off course in such a way that readers might wish they could call him or somehow get a message to him that will help him get back on track.
Ella and Liam are two ordinary people forced into dangerous and extraordinary situations that they have to get themselves out of without heretofore "hidden" skills revealed at the 25th hour.
While parts of the resolution didn't work for me, The Liar's Wife is written in such a way that once you start reading it, you'll have no doubt that you've entered a psychological thriller you're compelled to finish.
Thanks, Bookouture, for an ARC of this book.
